Scarlett Johansson has opened up about her long battle with acne and how it led her to launch her own skincare brand 'The Outset'.

The Hollywood star said she struggled with her skin from a young age often feeling pressure to cover up breakouts before stepping on set.

“I felt like I had to wake up and cover up all this acne before I got to work. It weighs on you,” she said.

Johansson said a comment from a makeup artist about her acne left her feeling self-conscious at a vulnerable age.

Her brand The Outset offers products designed to address common concerns such as breakouts and melasma a condition Johansson said she developed later in life.

Beyond skincare Johansson also reflected on the challenges she faced in her acting career including being typecast early on.

She said she was often offered similar roles describing them as “the other woman” or “the bombshell” an image she found difficult to move past.

Despite those challenges she went on to take on more diverse roles including her Tony-winning performance in A View From the Bridge helping reshape her career.

Now one of Hollywood’s most successful actors Johansson has earned Oscar nominations for films including Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit while also building a business alongside her acting work.

Her husband Colin Jost has also been involved in testing products which Johansson joked made him her “skincare guinea pig.”

Reflecting on balancing multiple roles as an actor, entrepreneur and mother Johansson said achieving perfect work-life balance is unrealistic.

“There is no work-life balance,” she said. “You can’t do everything all the time.”

She added that she has learned to be more forgiving of herself focusing instead on what is “good enough.”
