Keanu Reeves has earned high praise from Laverne Cox after they shared the screen in their latest dark comedy film, Outcome.

In a conversation with PEOPLE at the New York City premiere, the 53-year-old American actress praised the 61-year-old Canadian actor’s work ethic.

“Keanu is focused, and Keanu is intense and just dialed in every single take,” Cox said.

“But once his coverage is done, he just chills a bit, and he’s talking more. But he’s chill and really normal — as normal as you can be when you’re an international superstar,” she added. “But very chill, and unassuming and almost shy, which makes you want him even more.”

“But I was very appropriate on set — I didn’t flirt,” the Inventing Anna star admitted.

Later in the conversation, Cox revealed that she was initially hesitant to take on the role in the film, which is directed and co-written by Jonah Hill, but changed her mind after reading the script.

“[I received] an email with a personal note from Jonah about my work and how he really wanted me for this character, Virginia. And it was so sweet. And I said, ‘Oh, this is lovely.’ And then I was like, ‘Well, let’s read the script,’” she recounted.

After reading the script, the Uglies actress said she was impressed by how her character was written, calling it some of the most “insightful” and “smart” material she has ever performed.

However, Cox noted that if Hill had mentioned Reeves’ involvement earlier, she would have immediately signed on.

“I would’ve been like, ‘I’m in. I’m in,’” she shared.
