Poonam Pandey opens up about father slapping her after 2011 World Cup controversy
She had also explained that the situation quickly went out of control once India won the tournament and her old statement resurfaced online
A decade-old controversy linked to the 2011 ICC World Cup returned to discussion after Indian media personality and actress Poonam Pandey once again spoke about the incident that brought her sudden fame and strong backlash.
The Nasha actress had revisited the viral moment during a recent interview, where she reflected on how a public statement made during her early career changed her life overnight.
She had recalled that the idea came during a casual moment with friends on her birthday. She said she had not expected the comment to grow into a nationwide controversy after India’s World Cup win.
During the interview, she had stated, “Ab mujhe pata nahi ki is industry mein ghuste kaise hain na. There are a lot of things people do here which I am still learning by the way.”
She had also explained that the situation quickly went out of control once India won the tournament and her old statement resurfaced online. She said the reaction brought legal concerns and public pressure at the time.
She had added, “Main actually bahut dar gayi thi because court cases ho rahe the mere upar, waada poora karna bhi hai toh kaise karun.”
The Crrush actress had further shared that she even approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India for permission, but it was not granted.
Pandey had also spoken about the impact on her family after the controversy came public. She said her father saw the news in a newspaper, which led to a heated reaction at home.
She had recalled that her family expressed concern about reputation and social image, using strong words about tradition and expectations.
Looking back, she had said the incident gave her sudden visibility but also brought emotional and personal challenges that she had not fully understood at that time.
