Netflix romance series, Emily in Paris, romance extended beyond the screen for Lily Collins, who is reflecting on falling in love with her now-husband during the show’s first season.

On Friday, April 10, the actress shared the personal milestone while speaking at PaleyFest in Los Angeles, offering insight into how the series overlapped with a pivotal moment in her life.

Collins revealed that her relationship with filmmaker Charlie McDowell deepened while she was filming the Netflix hit in Paris.

“My husband and I were falling in love while I was filming season 1,” she said, recalling behind-the-scenes moments spent together, including overnight shoots at the Royal Opera House.

 The couple first met in 2019 on the set of McDowell’s film Gilded Rage, with their relationship progressing during Collins’ time filming abroad.

They later got engaged in 2020 and married in 2021, before welcoming their daughter, Tove Jane, via surrogate in January 2025.

Reflecting on the show’s broader themes, Collins said its appeal lies in more than just romantic storylines.

She described it as “a love letter to exploration of oneself,” highlighting friendships, work relationships and personal growth as key elements.

“So it’s a romance with the city, it’s a romance with oneself, and it’s about finding oneself,” she added, noting that while the show amplified that energy, her romantic outlook had always been part of who she is.
