The early years of Girls were heavy on creative intensity, but for Lena Dunham, they also carried a more complicated personal dimension involving co-star Adam Driver.

The actress and creator reflects on that relationship in her new memoir Famesick, describing a dynamic that oscillated between creative partnership and emotional strain.

Dunham writes that Driver, who played her on-screen love interest, could display volatile behaviour during rehearsals. She recalls an incident in which he hurled a chair at a wall near her, and another where he punched a hole through his trailer wall.

She adds that disagreements over scenes sometimes escalated, describing moments where his anger could turn “short-tempered and verbally aggressive,” with a presence she found physically imposing.

At the same time, Dunham paints a more layered picture of their bond, describing periods of closeness and mutual creative reliance.

“During the first season… we had felt like partners,” she writes, recalling rehearsals outside working hours and a sense of shared investment in the show.

She also recounts a moment that hinted at a potential shift beyond professional boundaries. “You still home alone?” she recalls Driver asking.

“I’m riding down to you… if I come up, I’m not leaving this time.” Dunham writes that she chose not to answer when he arrived, later reflecting that crossing that line could have altered their working dynamic irreversibly.

The pair, she notes, never revisited the moment. Weeks later, Driver informed her he was engaged to his now-wife, Joanne Tucker.
