Aubrey Plaza is detailing the unusual origins of her latest animated series, Kevin, inspired by a personal experience from her early life in New York.

The Prime Video project, Kevin, inspired by her real-life pet, also reconnects her with a former partner in an unexpected creative setting.

During her recent appearance on Friday, April 17, episode of The View, Plaza described pitching the show with co-creators Dan Murphy and Joe Wengert, her ex-boyfriend, as a “really weird” experience.

She revealed it felt “like an acid trip for me” while speaking on the show.

“Yes, Joe and I, a long, long time ago, we lived in Queens, which is where the show is set,” she said. “We actually had two cats, Kevin and Howard, and we adopted them from like a mob family.”

She added, “Pitching the show was a really full-circle, crazy moment. Because I was 19 when I met Joe. It kind of felt cathartic in a way, kind of like couple’s therapy, but 20 years later… And we’re not a couple… So, this is like an acid trip for me. A lot going on for me.”

Premiering April 20 on Prime Video, the series stars Jason Schwartzman as the titular cat, alongside Whoopi Goldberg, John Waters, Amy Sedaris, and Aparna Nancherla, centring on a pet navigating life after his owners’ breakup.
