How dangerous explosion sequence filmed for 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge'?
Real train containers and 500 litres of fuel: SFX supervisor reveals how Dhurandhar shot its big explosion scene
Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge has been praised for various reasons, and its large-scale and intense action scenes are one of them.
But in today’s cinematography, where the use of VFX has become very common for difficult sequences the action director shared details of how the action scenes in this spy thriller were filmed which surprised many.
SFX supervisor Vishal Tyagi, speaking on a podcast with Hindi Rush, revealed that all the explosions in the film were real, including the massive climax sequence featuring Ranveer Singh and Arjun Rampal, which used 500 litres of petrol.
He opened up about one of the toughest scenes filmed for Dhurandhar, revealing how a large tanker explosion became a stressful experience for the crew.
He said, usually makers enhance smaller explosions through CGI. But “But Aditya Dhar said, 'I don't want to use CGI,' especially for explosions. Jo last waala tanker blast tha, that was the toughest. Usmein sabse bada safety concern tha. Imagine 500 litres of petrol. All the fragments in that blast were real. Ranveer was walking in close proximity, and I had to make sure the flames did not reach Ranveer. We did all the work and precisely told Ranveer Singh where he could start walking. Humne actually Dhurandhar mein khoon paseena diya hai .”
Vishal further explained that real train bases and containers were used to create the sequence, making the setup even harder to execute.
“I had a lot of production pressure on me. Real train base and containers were used for the explosion. It was very challenging, but we were confident. Production told me to use 250 litres, but I was adamant that at least 500 litres of fuel was required. To make that explode, I also had to add 25 kilos of explosive in each of these tanks to get the right effect. Maine suna sabki, ki apne mann ki,” he added.
Vishal also shared that Arjun Rampal was first supposed to appear in the same shot, but the idea was dropped before filming because of safety worries.
He admitted he was far more tense than Ranveer during the shoot, while the actor stayed relaxed and trusted the team completely.
The stunt director said many crew members even stayed back after pack-up just to watch the explosion being filmed.
Once the shot was done, Ranveer reportedly congratulated the team and said, “Faad diya tune (You absolutely smashed it).”
Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar: The Revenge follows Ranveer Singh’s character Jaskirat Singh Rangi in a fierce avatar. It is also the first Bollywood film to cross Rs 1,000 crore net in India.
