The Devil Wears Prada 2 made estimated $77 million in its opening weekend
The Devil Wears Prada 2 debuted at No. 1 in North America earning an estimated $77 million in its opening weekend and marking a strong return for the fashion-focused franchise nearly two decades after the original film.
The sequel brings back Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs who once again finds herself working under formidable editor Miranda Priestly played by Meryl Streep.
Returning cast members Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci also reprise their roles alongside a mix of new faces and celebrity cameos.
Released by 20th Century Fox and directed by David Frankel the film follows the magazine’s struggle to survive in a changing media landscape.
“This is a sensational opening for a comedy drama,” said analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research pointing to strong reviews and themes that remain culturally relevant.
The original film earned Streep a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Priestly a character widely believed to be inspired by Anna Wintour.
Last weekend’s top film Michael dropped to second place with $54 million. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson the biopic has now surpassed $423 million globally.
In third place The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earned $12.1 million pushing its domestic total past $400 million and global earnings close to $900 million.
Project Hail Mary took fourth place with $8.6 million. The film stars Ryan Gosling as a teacher-turned-astronaut on a mission to save Earth and has grossed over $625 million worldwide.
Rounding out the top five Hokum earned $6.4 million. Directed by Damian McCarthy and starring Adam Scott the film has drawn strong reviews from critics and audiences.
