Kellie Pickler duets with American Idol contestant, marking rare return
Kellie Pickler has made a rare return to the spotlight, reuniting with the stage that first launched her career: American Idol.
The Grammy-nominated country-pop singer appeared on the show on May 4 during its 20th anniversary reunion special featuring the 2006 cast. Pickler, who finished sixth in season five, returned more than a decade after her original run on the competition.
Her appearance marked a significant moment following a long break from public performances after the death of her husband, Kyle Jacobs, in February 2023.
Since then, Pickler has largely stepped away from the industry, making only a handful of selective appearances.
During the episode, she performed Martina McBride’s A Broken Wing alongside current contestant Hannah Harper.
The duet received strong praise from the judging panel, with Lionel Richie describing the pairing as a “perfect blend” and calling the performance “incredible.”
“The two of you make one dynamic performance,” Richie said on air.
Pickler’s return was first hinted at on April 29 during the show’s official companion podcast. Her appearance also reunited her with fellow alumni, including Taylor Hicks, Paris Bennett, Elliott Yamin, and Bucky Covington.
After Jacobs’ passing, Pickler released a heartfelt statement thanking fans for their support and quoting advice he had once given her about handling crisis: “If you don’t know what to do, do nothing, just be still.”
The singer has gradually re-emerged, including a 2024 performance at a Patsy Cline tribute concert in Nashville, marking her first major stage appearance since her husband’s death.
