Lena Dunham made a striking return to the Met Gala in 2026, revealing that her Valentino look was directly inspired by a 17th-century masterpiece as she embraced the event’s Fashion Is Art theme.

Speaking to Vogue, the Girls creator explained that her feathered and sequined red gown, designed by Alessandro Michele, drew inspiration from Artemisia Gentileschi’s painting Judith Slaying Holofernes

The artwork, known for its dramatic depiction of violence and emotion, served as the conceptual starting point for her ensemble.

“I shared that inspiration with Alessandro,” Dunham said, noting that the designer’s interpretation took an unexpected direction.

Rather than focusing on traditional Renaissance elements, Michele gravitated toward a more abstract detail from the painting. “He was attracted to a particular blood spatter on the neck of Holofernes,” she explained.

Dunham said she was immediately drawn to that creative angle, describing Michele’s approach as both playful and technically precise.

“Obviously, that’s what I was going to choose,” she added. “I love how playful he is while also having this incredible amount of technical skill, and also having a sense of humor and also taking things very seriously.”

She also said the final look captured that balance perfectly, calling the gown a reflection of both the emotional intensity of the artwork and the designer’s imaginative reinterpretation.

Dunham’s appearance marked a notable return to the Met Gala after seven years, reinforcing her continued interest in fashion.
