Steven Spielberg joins '90s classic 'Casper' reboot
Live-action series of 'Casper the Friendly Ghost' is reportedly set to be adapted
A nostalgic favorite from the ’90s is officially rising again, as Casper gears up for a reboot with Steven Spielberg attached to the project.
Steven Spielberg was behind the original 1995 hit as a producer, with Malachi Pearson lending his voice to the beloved ghost.
Starring Devon Sawa, Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty, and Eric Idle, the pioneering film also broke ground as the first to feature a fully CGI lead character.
A major new chapter for Casper appears to be taking shape, as Deadline reported that Disney+ has secured the rights after an intense multi-studio bidding battle.
Rob Letterman, known for Goosebumps, is set to direct the project, co-writing the script with Hilary Winston.
In addition to directing and writing, they will executive produce the project with Steven Spielberg, Christina Ricci, and Universal Studio Group’s UCP.
Plot and cast details are kept under the wraps but as per Deadline it will be "a modern update on the classic ghost story", which was originally from the 1940s.
Before becoming a film and TV staple, Casper made his screen debut in Casper the Friendly Ghost (Famous Studios), which ran from 1945 to 1959.
