Madhuri Dixit’s husband, Dr Nene has opened up about his upbringing, revealing why his parents were adamant about investing in a conventional career for him.

In an exclusive discussion with INKtalks, he spoke at length about owning a software house at the age of 14. However, he was later pushed toward a conventional career path, leaving him with little or no choice.

Recalling how he gave in to the pressure and decided to become a doctor, Dr Nene explained, “I had a software company when I was 14, and my migrant parents said that you either become a doctor or an engineer, or we don’t pay for it. That’s their mindset as first-generation parents; they didn’t know anything better.

“But I dutifully did not go to Stanford or Berkeley, even though I got in everywhere, and instead went to an undergraduate medical program at Washington University. I finished there, went to UCLA, completed general and vascular surgery training, then trained in heart surgery at the University of Florida, and then practiced.”

In addition, he referred to medicine as a deeply meaningful profession where timing matters the most.

He said it was genuinely rewarding to see patients recover every time a surgery was successful.

For the unversed, Madhuri and Dr. Shriram Nene tied the knot back in  October 1999.
