Actor Vijay is over the moon these days following a historic win in the Tamil Nadu elections.

As he is heading towards the CM’s seat, a legal petition linked to a decade-old film has arrived at this politically important time.

A writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking an FIR against the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief over alleged income tax irregularities connected to the 2015 film Puli.

The petition was reportedly filed last month. While the Registry first declined to number the case, a bench led by Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan later directed that the plea be numbered, subject to maintainability.

The case goes back to Income Tax Department searches conducted in September 2015 after the release of Puli.

According to the petition, officials recovered materials allegedly showing unaccounted cash transactions linked to Vijay’s remuneration.

It claims that producers P.T. Selvakumar and Shibu paid Rs 4.93 crore in cash apart from a cheque of Rs 16 crore for the actor’s work in the film. It further alleges that TDS was deposited only for the cheque amount.

The development comes when TVK is trying to move from election success to government formation.

The party emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, still short of the majority mark.

Reports continue to speculate about possible alliances with DMK or AIADMK.

There are also claims that Vijay may take oath as Chief Minister on May 7, though there has been no official confirmation yet.
