Late-night television’s biggest names turned personal headlines into punchlines as Jimmy Kimmel’s private group chat reaction to political turmoil was revealed on Live TV.

During the Monday, May 11 episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Stephen Colbert welcomed fellow late-night hosts Seth Meyers, John Oliver, Jimmy Fallon, and Jimmy Kimmel for a joint appearance marking Colbert’s final weeks on air.

The conversation took a political turn when Colbert asked whether any of them had ever held jobs that “the president of the United States would have strong feelings about.”

Kimmel responded with a sharp jab, adding that it becomes “even weirder” when those reactions come from the president’s spouse.

The exchange referenced a recent controversy in which First Lady Melania Trump publicly urged ABC to “take a stand” against Kimmel after what she described as “hateful and violent rhetoric” on his show.

Oliver then revealed that Kimmel had alerted the group chat during the backlash.

“It’s an amazing thing to get a text from Jimmy saying, ‘Oh boy,’ and then a picture of Melania mad at him,” he said, adding. "What a way to start the day."

Fallon added with characteristic humour that his own response was, “Don’t be mad at me but I liked it. I think she’s got a point.”

Kimmel, meanwhile, reflected on the ripple effect of such controversies, saying most of the reaction is confined to the tight circle of fellow hosts before slowly reaching the wider public.

"I realize in those moments that the only four people who care are sitting right here. It takes 12 hours for the rest of the people in my life to even figure out that anything's going on," he said.

Kimmel also joked that even former colleagues eventually chimed in with unexpected requests, including one asking for a real estate lawyer.
