Sonam Bajwa raises questions over Punjab’s stray dog crackdown
Sonam Bajwa asks the Punjab government to show compassion in the stray dog drive
Indian Punjab’s new stray dog control campaign has sparked debate online, and actor Sonam Bajwa has also joined the voices with a public appeal to the state government.
The 36-year-old took to Instagram after the Punjab administration officially launched its statewide management drive on May 22 following a sharp rise in dog-bite cases across the region.
While the government says the campaign is aimed at controlling aggressive stray animals and improving public safety, the Sardaar ji actress warned that people may be misunderstanding the Supreme Court’s directions.
“The Court spoke about regulated removal from sensitive public spaces along with sterilisation, vaccination and sheltering — not wiping dogs off the streets,” she wrote.
Tagging Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in her post, the Kappal actor questioned whether the state has enough shelters and systems in place to manage such a large operation properly.
“Where are the shelters? Where is the infrastructure?” Sonam questioned. “This absolutely cannot become a death sentence for voiceless animals. Public safety matters. Human lives matter. But compassion and responsibility matter too.”
The issue has become more serious in recent months after growing reports of stray dog attacks pushed authorities to act quickly.
The Shaada actress, however, said long-term solutions like vaccination drives, sterilisation programmes and better shelter systems are needed instead of only removal campaigns.
“How we treat the voiceless ultimately reflects who we are as a society,” she added.
On the film front, SonamBajwa was recently seen in Border 2 alongside Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan and Ahan Shetty.
