Obsession is continuing its impressive run at the box office becoming one of the latest surprise successes in the horror genre.
The low-budget film earned an estimated $22 million during its second weekend in North America playing in more than 2,600 theatres across the US and Canada.
The strong hold is especially notable because horror films often experience major drops after their opening weekend.
Instead Obsession managed to maintain steady audience interest helping it outperform many industry expectations.
Box office analysts have pointed out that smaller-budget horror films continue to perform well in theatres when they connect with audiences and Obsession is quickly becoming another example of that trend.
Its latest earnings have further strengthened the film’s position as one of the unexpected breakout hits currently in cinemas.
The movie’s continued success also comes amid increasing competition from bigger studio releases making its second-week performance even more significant for a low-budget production.
