'Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai' faces trouble before release
Varun Dhawan's film lands in middle of music rights battle as 'Biwi No.1' songs spark Rs 400 crore Bollywood court fight
Just days before its release, Varun Dhawan’s upcoming comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has landed in a massive legal fight over two hit Bollywood songs from the 1999 film Biwi No.1.
Producer Vashu Bhagnani’s Puja Entertainment has filed a Rs 400 crore lawsuit in the Bombay High Court against Tips Industries, Ramesh Taurani, Kumar Taurani and filmmaker David Dhawan over the use of songs from the 1999 hit film Biwi No.1.
The dispute is over two popular tracks, Chunnari Chunnari and Ishq Sona Hai, which are being used in David Dhawan’s upcoming comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, starring Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur.
Puja Entertainment says the makers do not hold the proper rights to use the songs and has asked the court to stop the film’s release, streaming and promotions carrying the tracks.
The title of the film has also become part of the fight because it comes from the song Ishq Sona Hai. Bhagnani’s company now wants the title changed too.
Explaining the matter, Bhagnani’s lawyer told ANI, “We have filed a suit with a claim of Rs. 400 crores to the Tips Music Company.”
He added, “Justice will prevail, and the truth will come out.”
According to the lawyer, old agreements with Tips only covered audio rights, while visual rights were never settled properly.
Tips Industries has denied the claims and called the allegations baseless. The company says it legally owns the music and audio rights of the songs.
The film is currently scheduled to release on June 5.
