Wil Wheaton nearly passed on The Big Bang Theory, but later had a change of heart that led him to join the sitcom.

In chat with The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast, on June 1, the 53-year-old star reflected on his time on the fan-favourite sitcom, which ran from 2007 to 2019.

Long before he was asked to appear, Wil said he had already heard about the sitcom which was created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady.

In an honest take, he told the host Jessica Radloff that he initially had no interest in watching it.

“All I heard was, ‘It's a sitcom about nerds,' and my immediate thought was, ‘Oh, they're making fun of us,'" he admitted. “Because that's what has happened our entire lifetimes. I didn't realize that one of the reasons Bill created the show was to upset that and change that paradigm.”

He further explained that he was hesitant to watch the show because during his childhood he used to be 'bullied' for being a ‘nerd.’

“I didn't choose to be a weird, sensitive artist,” he remarked.

Wil recalled being criticized for not fitting the athletic mold, choosing instead to focus on “science and history and art,” which many of his classmates couldn’t relate to.

But the Star Trek: The Next Generation actor eventually gave in and realised he had it all wrong and that the show was “so funny.”

Later he got offered a role on the series, sharing, “Bill pitched me on being Sheldon's nemesis.”
