After widespread criticism from viewers and social media users on the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor in recent released film Peddi, Filmmaker Buchi Babu Sana issued an apology.

The Ram Charan-led film features the 29-year-old actress in a key role as Achiyyamma, facing severe backlash on social media since its release for how her character is introduced and portrayed on screen.

Viewers have pointed to scenes they say objectify the character including shots focusing on her physical appearance and a controversial sequence in which the male lead character behaves in an aggressive and inappropriate manner.

However the director claimed that it was not an intentional approach to "objectify" or "disrespect" any female character.

Posting a detailed statement over X (formerly Twitter) Buchi Babu Sana wrote, "As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. 

We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in Peddi and have taken it seriously. I have always had immense respect for women, both on and off screen, and it was never our intention to objectify or disrespect any female character."

The filmmaker apologises, saying “If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments, understand the concerns being raised, and sincerely apologize.”

He expressed his willingness to make changes to certain scenes in Peddi following the backlash from audiences, adding that “Cinema grows through its connection with audiences, and as storytellers, we have a responsibility to be mindful of evolving perspectives and sensitivities.”

He further said, “Every woman deserves to be respected, valued, and represented with dignity. We remain committed to telling stories that celebrate strong characters and uphold those values.

Amid the ongoing debate the Bawaal actress herself drew attention after reportedly endorsing a social media post criticising the way her character was portrayed in the film.

So far she is maintaining her silence on this matter and hasn't issued any statement.
