Kanye West is set to perform in the Netherlands this weekend but not before receiving a public appeal from a local mayor urging him to make a statement against antisemitism.

The rapper who performs under the name Ye is scheduled to take the stage in Arnhem on June 6 and June 8 after Dutch authorities allowed the concerts to go ahead despite calls from some groups to block the shows.

Ahead of the performances Arnhem Mayor Ahmed Marcouch called on West to visit the city’s Holocaust memorial alongside the chief rabbi and lay a wreath in remembrance of Holocaust victims.

According to local reports Marcouch believes such a gesture would send a powerful message to the public and demonstrate a clear stance against antisemitism following years of controversy surrounding the rapper’s remarks.

The mayor’s comments come after several Jewish organisations sought legal action to prevent West from performing in the country.

However the courts ultimately rejected those efforts clearing the way for the concerts to proceed as planned.

While the shows are moving forward demonstrations are expected outside the venue.

Reports suggest that around 100 protesters are likely to gather during the concerts with organisers planning a peaceful protest against West’s appearance.

Local authorities have designated a specific area for the demonstration away from the stadium entrance in an effort to maintain public safety and avoid disruptions for concertgoers.
