Amid growing criticism of Peddi, veteran actress Jaya Bachchan and Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor addressed the issue of objectifying women onscreen.

Jaya shared her experience with Deccan Chronicle, recalling, “Nobody ever dared to cross the line with me. I had only one unpleasant experience of being objectified by a director. I never worked with him again.”

The film faced backlash after audiences raised concerns about the oversexualisation of Janhvi Kapoor’s character. Many viewers criticized the makers for showing her in an overly provocative manner.

Kareena also spoke on the matter, emphasizing that sensuality does not depend on revealing clothes.

“Look at Kajol in that song, Suraj Hua Maddham in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, or Srideviji in the song Tere Mere Honthon Pe in Chandni — they captivated audiences without showing much skin. My mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore, in songs like Aradhana and Roop Tera Mastana, was covered from head to toe and still epitomized sensuality. Being sensual onscreen is about presence and performance, not objectification,” she explained.

Director, Buchi Babu Sana, addressed the criticism and apologized publicly. He confirmed that the scenes which caused objections would be edited.

“As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in Peddi and have taken it seriously. I have always had immense respect for women, both on and off screen, and it was never our intention to objectify or disrespect any female character,” Buchi Babu Sana wrote on social media.
