Gene Shalit the veteran film critic and television personality known for his distinctive style and witty reviews has died at the age of 100.

Shalit’s family confirmed that he passed away peacefully after what they described as “100 years of an amazing life.”

Shalit's cause of death was not disclosed.

Known for his trademark bushy moustache, oversized glasses, colourful bow ties and quick-fire puns Shalit brought a unique blend of humour and insight to movie criticism.

His popular Critic’s Corner segments made him a household name from the 1970s until his retirement in 2010.

In a statement shared with NBC News his family reflected on his deep connection to the network.

“The Today Show was an extraordinary era for him,” they said.

Throughout his career Shalit interviewed some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Liza Minnelli, Carol Channing and filmmaker Steven Spielberg. He also spoke with the cast of the original Star Wars films during the franchise’s rise to global fame.

Before joining television Shalit established himself as a respected film critic at Look Magazine. He later contributed columns to several major publications, including The New York Times, Ladies’ Home Journal and TV Guide.

In 2002 he published Great Hollywood Wit a collection celebrating decades of memorable jokes, one-liners and humorous stories from entertainment legends.
