Few homes have captured the internet's imagination quite like the Invisible House, the mirrored desert mansion that has drawn celebrities, influencers and curious travellers from around the world to a remote stretch of Southern California.

Owned by movie directors Chris and Roberta Hanley, who have made films such as "American Psycho" and "The Virgin Suicides", it is one of the most photographed and popular homes in the America.

Located within the rural region called High Desert just outside Joshua Tree National Park, it is located two hours east of Los Angeles on a 90-acre land, which contains its own 4,000 feet high mountain.

From afar, the house disappears completely, as its walls are entirely reflective and blend in with the surroundings, becoming one of the biggest attractions for everyone from photographers and advertising agencies to celebrities.

Inside the Invisible House

The house, designed by architect Tomas Osinski and completed in 2019, has a design philosophy that revolves around a relatively straightforward concept the creation of an "ultra-minimalist, monolithic, reflective" rectangular shape that emerged spontaneously during the design phase. What began with just a straightforward box-like building and an outdoor swimming pool developed into a cantilevered three-bedroom, four-bathroom house suspended 100 feet above ground level.

The standout feature of the entire structure is its 100-foot-long indoor swimming pool, which passes through several open spaces within the house. Within its interiors, one will find a two-tonne solid glass bed made by Italian designer Santambrogio as part of the master suite, along with an additional guest suite where the bed itself is made out of marble.

Smart-home technology runs quietly throughout, from remote-controlled blackout shades to Solarcool glass that filters light using passive solar design. The house also includes a prefab guest house, a 222-square-foot projection wall, and solar and thermal systems built to minimise its environmental footprint, among the smallest of any property in the Joshua Tree area.

In the evening hours, the house takes another turn as one side opens up to the outside, and a fire pit nestled amidst the stones makes it possible for visitors to view some of the darkest night skies found anywhere in Southern California, including viewing the Milky Way when there is no moon out.

Design-wise, this house looks to Mies van der Rohe's skyscrapers of New York and to the monolith seen in 2001: A Space Odyssey but laid sideways. Agents say that this home is unique compared to other structures built in the desert.
