Alpha had a decent first weekend at the box office, not spectacular, but steady enough to keep things interesting heading into the week.

Alia Bhatt and Sharvari's spy thriller picked up pace on Sunday, earning Rs 13.25 crore, a 15.2 per cent jump from Saturday, according to early estimates by Sacnilk. That brings the film's three-day India nett total to around Rs 34 crore.

Add in the overseas numbers and the worldwide gross sits at roughly Rs 58.80 crore, with India gross at Rs 40.80 crore and around Rs 18 crore coming in from international markets.

What is worth noting is that the Sunday numbers came despite heavy rain disrupting footfall in Mumbai and Delhi.

Occupancy started quietly in the morning at around 12.92 per cent, climbed to 38.46 per cent in the afternoon, peaked at 49.38 per cent during evening shows, and settled at 31.62 per cent for the night shows. Not bad, all things considered.

The film's had a mixed run with critics too. India Today gave it 2.5 stars, praising Alia's performance as Sita but flagging an inconsistent screenplay.

Now all eyes are on Monday, the first weekday number will be the real test of whether Alpha can hold its ground or starts sliding.

Directed by Shiv Rawail and written by Uday Chopra, Alpha is the seventh film in the YRF Spy Universe.

It also stars Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Dia Mirza in key roles and released on July 3.
