Amar Upadhyay reflects on starring in ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ with number of females
Amar Upadhyay has reflected on his experience starring in the iconic Indian television series Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, praising the show’s female-driven narrative.
Playing Mihir Virani, Amar emerged as one of the few male leads who left a lasting mark in a series dominated by strong female characters.
The show, which became the number one series globally across languages, relied heavily on its matriarchs and daughters-in-law to drive the storyline.
“Being part of a female-dominated show never intimidated me," Amar told India Forums. "I always believed that if the character is honest and emotionally grounded, the audience will automatically connect, regardless of gender or screen time."
The actor said in the show, strongly led by women, he understood his simple job: "support the emotion, not fight it."
"That balance is what made the characters feel real,” he said
In his portrayal, Amar brought calm strength, emotional depth, and dignity to Mihir, avoiding dramatic heroics in favour of subtlety.
Television critics and audiences continue to recognise Amar’s role as a rare male lead who complemented, rather than overshadowed, the show’s powerful women, cementing his place in Indian television history.
