Lupita Nyong’o has recently discussed women health, raising awareness about health condition that is often overlooked.

Speaking on TODAY, the 12 Years A Slave actress revealed she was diagnosed with 30 uterine fibroids back in 2014, the same year she won an Academy Award.

“I was experiencing high and low at the same time,” recalled the 42-year-old.

Elaborating on signs, Lupita mentioned that she “had heavy bleeding and pain among other symptoms and I was stunned to be going through this”.

The actress realised that doctor had no specific treatment about this condition, it was either surgery or deal with the pain.

“I chose the surgery at the time,” remarked the Black Panther actress.

However, after 12 years, she again got fibroids and this time, it’s more than what she had earlier.

Reflecting on her struggle with fibroids, the 355 star pointed out that she felt “shame” and even “loneliness” while going through this health problem.

Again, Lupita was left with two options, which made her think that if majority of women have been going through this issue, there should be a third option in addition to hysterectomy, which is the complete removal of the reproductive organ.

The actress suggested that it’s important to “seek a second opinion and don’t accept hysterectomy as the first resort”.

Looking back, Lupita decides to launch an awareness campaign, Make Fibroids Count and decides to commit $200,000 toward research aimed at less invasive treatments, which is in collaboration with the Foundation for Women’s Health.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Lupita will next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey movie, which will release in July.
