Disney shifts release plans for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ ahead of launch
The Star Wars movie will debut worldwide without a festival premiere
Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing to bring fan-favourite Star Wars characters Din Djarin and Grogu to theatres for the first time since 2019.
But the rollout for The Mandalorian and Grogu is facing unexpected changes.
Originally part of a larger streaming-era narrative the so-called “Mando-Verse” the franchise’s long-term plans appear to be under review following leadership changes at Lucasfilm.
Only a handful of New Republic projects remain confirmed including The Mandalorian and Grogu and Ahsoka Season 2 with no word yet on additional spin-offs or The Mandalorian Season 4.
UK cinema chain Odeon lists the runtime at roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes aligning with recent Star Wars theatrical releases.
Despite its theatrical ambitions the film is unlikely to debut at the 79th Cannes Film Festival which runs from May 12–23 2026.
Deadline reported that major studio releases including The Mandalorian and Grogu will not appear in this year’s lineup limiting high-profile festival exposure.
The film marks the first Star Wars theatrical release since The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
Favreau directs and co-wrote the film with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor.
The story follows Din Djarin and Grogu navigating a galaxy still contending with Imperial remnants while collaborating with the New Republic.
Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, Grogu is brought to life through practical effects and the cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, Jonny Coyne, and Steve Blum reprising his role as Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios.
As Lucasfilm transitions streaming-born stories to theatres The Mandalorian and Grogu will test how effectively these characters can carry the franchise on the big screen marking a new chapter for the Star Wars universe.
