Oprah Winfrey has a painful skeleton in her closet about experiencing body-shaming on live TV.

The Emmy-winning television host and producer faced the embarrassing incident right after becoming the anchor of A.M. Chicago during her appearance in 1985 on The Tonight Show.

Winfrey was a guest opposite comedian Joan Rivers, who was hosting in place of regular host Johnny Carson. During a candid conversation, Rivers dragged Oprah’s weight into the discussion.

It started when Rivers asked how she gained weight after winning a beauty contest, while urging her to lose weight, and added remarks on her presentation.

“You said it was fifty pounds!” Rivers chimed. “You shouldn't let that happen to you. You're very pretty. You're a pretty girl, and you're single — you must lose the weight!”

However, Winfrey was shocked by receiving such brutal remarks and being subjected to body-shaming on live television.

Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning later, the Oscar-nominated actor and media mogul reflected on leaving the studio mortified.

“I was stunned in that moment,” she said. “I’m sitting there, and we’re toward the end of the interview, and Joan turns to me and says, ‘So, tell me, you know, how’d you gain the weight?’”

Winfrey said she honestly admitted she had been eating a lot. Her statement led to further harsh remarks from Rivers.

Despite the uncomfortable conversation, Winfrey said she was not angry.

The media icon believed Rivers had no intention of hurting her and was simply being blunt rather than cruel.
