Harleen Deol: From ‘retired out’ controversy to match-winner in 24 hours
Deol’s match-winning performance against the Mumbai Indians silenced all the critiques
UP Warriorz player Harleen Deol found herself at the centre of a debate in WPL 2026 during a match against Delhi Capitals. The head coach Abhishek Nayar tactically “retired-out” Deol in the 18th over to bring in a power-hitter Chloe Tryon.
However, Harleen’s latest match-winning performance against the Mumbai Indian’s silenced the noise within 24 hours. Dominated the field from the very beginning, she struck boundaries against elite bowlers like Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr.
Staying calm and focused on her timing, she capitalized on every delivery finds gaps on wide balls and working the leg-side for runs. Playing a risk-free game regardless of the pace, she became the second Indian player to hit a half-century in this WPL season.
Harry scored a brilliant 64 off just 39 balls, remaining not out and leading her team to their first victory of the season. After the match, she reflected on her style:
“I just got a few boundary balls, so I could convert it into boundaries. Honestly, yesterday gave me a lot of confidence in fat because the first two games didn’t go my way. I went on and figured out a few things, I was just trying to overhit; this wicket is not the kind that would reward overhitting, scoring requires more timing.”
The 24- hour redemption for the player, often called “Happy Singh,” proved to be a game-changer for the UP Warriorz. While “retiring-out” is becoming a T20 norm, Harleen proved that staying at the crease can be just as impactful.
