Indian actor Aamir Khan confirmed that a sequel to the hit film 3 Idiots was in development during a recent conversation The project was being worked on by director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi.

The Laal Singh Chaddha actor shared that the story was currently in process and had been shaped around the original characters after a gap of 10 years. He said he had already heard the script, which was still being refined.

Aamir explained that another project based on Dadasaheb Phalke’s life had been paused for now, as the team was not fully satisfied with the script drafts.

He stated that Rajkumar Hirani was now focussed on completing 3 Idiots 2. “I have heard the story, and it has turned out very well,” Aamir said during the interview.

Aamir also expressed interest in returning to his iconic role, saying he was looking forward to stepping back into the character again.

The PK actor added that the sequel kept the same humour and emotional depth as the original film while presenting a fresh direction. The film was expected to revisit the beloved characters in a new phase of life.

Earlier, last year Aamir Khan and R Madhavan had clarified that they had not been approached for a 3 Idiots sequel amid ongoing speculation.

Madhavan said, “A sequel to 3 Idiots sounds great. But it also sounds far-fetched. All three of us, Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and I are much older now. Where do we go in the sequel? What are our lives like now? It is an interesting thought. But hardly conducive to a proper sequel. I would love to work with Raju Hirani again. But 3 Idiots again? I think that would be idiotic.” 

Aamir said that he is delighted by the thought of a sequel to 3 Idiots. “We had so much fun making that film! My character Rancho is the most popular character I’ve played. People still talk about Rancho.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots remained one of the most successful and influential films in Indian cinema, and the sequel announcement has already created strong anticipation among fans.
