Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac reflect on chemistry in Netflix’s ‘Beef’
Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac reunite extensively in Beef season two, where they take on leading roles in a complex on-screen relationship.
The actors have previously shared brief screen moments across multiple projects, including Drive (2011) and Inside Llewyn Davis (2013).
Mulligan and Isaac have reflected on their on-screen chemistry ahead of the show’s return, describing the experience as “really exciting” after finally working together at length for the first time in their careers.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Isaac said their earlier collaborations were “beautiful” but limited, noting that this project allowed them to spend “a lot of time” developing their characters and relationship across the eight-episode arc, adding that “it was really exciting”.
Mulligan said there was significant anticipation around properly working with Isaac, describing the relationship they portray as “weird, complicated, true and outrageous,” while also noting that playing Lindsay felt “freeing” as the character is introduced at a low point.
She added that the role becomes more layered as Lindsay attempts to mask her struggles, suggesting the narrative will evolve as the character navigates denial and emotional tension.
In the new season, the duo portray married couple Lindsay Crane-Martin, an interior designer, and Josh Martin, a country club general manager, whose strained relationship unfolds after a heated domestic argument is filmed by employees, played by Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny
The upcoming season is expected to deepen the show’s character-driven storytelling as the series expands its ensemble and narrative scope.
