John Nolan known for his roles in Batman films and Dunkirk has died at the age of 85 with tributes pouring in from family and fans.

The veteran actor who frequently collaborated with his nephews Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan passed away on April 11. His death was first reported by the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald.

He also featured in several of Christopher Nolan’s films including Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises where he played a Wayne Enterprises board member.

In Dunkirk he portrayed a blind war veteran in a brief but memorable role.

His wife Kim Hartman paid an emotional tribute describing him as “a free spirit” and “the kindest person” she had ever known.

“He always knew what he wanted and acted on his own terms… articulate, intelligent, and with an anarchic wit,” she said adding that he was also a devoted family man and a gifted teacher.

Born in 1938 Nolan had a long career spanning theatre, television and film.

He also worked as a director and lecturer at Stratford College mentoring aspiring performers.

His final screen appearance came in Dune: Prophecy where he played the Speaker of the High Council.

Fans also shared tributes online remembering his performances and frequent appearances in his nephews’ projects with many praising his role in Person of Interest.

Nolan’s legacy spans decades of work across stage and screen leaving behind a body of work that resonated with audiences worldwide.
