Sabrina Carpenter under fire for passing culturally insensitive remarks at Coachella
Social media users criticised the singer after a comment made to a fan mid-performance
Sabrina Carpenter is facing online criticism following a moment from her headline performance at Coachella that has sparked debate on social media.
The controversy began during her April 10 set when the singer paused mid-performance to address a fan in the crowd who was making loud celebratory noises.
Carpenter asked the fan to stop but the situation escalated when the individual responded that the sound was part of their “culture.”
In reply Carpenter said “Yodeling is your culture? That’s weird” a remark that quickly drew backlash online after clips of the exchange began circulating.
Critics accused the singer of being dismissive and insensitive with some social media users calling the comment “disrespectful” and urging her to apologise.
One user wrote that Carpenter “should’ve stopped talking” after the fan explained themselves while others said the tone of the response came across as mocking.
Some users also expressed personal offence arguing that the remark crossed a line by dismissing cultural expression.
As of now Carpenter has not publicly addressed the backlash.
