The film has been described as a long-time passion project for the 68-year-old filmmaker, who is known for films and shows like Salaam Bombay!, Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake and A Suitable Boy.

Set across Hungary, France and India in the early 20th century, Amri follows the life of Sher-Gil and the experiences that shaped her art and identity.

Priyanka Chopra is also attached to the film as an executive producer.

Sher-Gil is regarded as one of the most important women artists of the 20th century.

She died at the age of 28, but works like Two Women, The Bride’s Toilet and Group of Three Girls continue to remain widely discussed in the art world.

The film is currently being shot in India and Hungary. Nair has co-written the project with Clara Royer and is also producing it with Samudrika Arora and Michael Nozik.
