Paul Seed who is best known for his early role in Coronation Street and later acclaimed work behind the camera has died at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer.

Seed began his career as an actor in the 1970s appearing as Father Harris on Coronation Street between 1979 and 1981.

He later transitioned into directing and built a celebrated career across British television.

Seed went on to helm major dramas including House of Cards, A Touch of Frost and Doc Martin becoming one of the industry’s most respected creative figures.

Over the years he worked with leading actors such as Kenneth Branagh and Liam Neeson early in their careers helping shape landmark performances on screen.

Seed’s contributions earned him two BAFTA awards including Best Single Drama for A Rather English Marriage and Best Drama for Just William.

Beyond directing he also appeared in several productions including Doctor Who and Tales of the Unexpected.
