‘Opalite’ video review: Taylor Swift, Domhnall Gleeson’s power romance
Taylor Swift sheds light on loneliness and personal growth in a star-studded music video of Opalite featuring Domhnall Gleeson, Cillian Murphy, Greta Lee, and Jodie Turner-Smith.
In the new music video, which has broken the internet, Swift channeled more of the unexpected theme to her hit song with her “Opalite” magic potion spray.
On Friday, February 6, the music video directed by Swift was dropped. The clip opens with a ‘90s style commercial of “Opalite” spray, promising to turn life’s dissatisfaction and loneliness into happiness.
“What if I told you you could turn all that crappiness into happiness?” the advertiser says in the faux commercial, pledging the “Opalite” potion can turn “your problems into your paradise.”
Sitting there, Swift’s character watches the ad while spending time with her unusual partner: a grey rock, taking it on dates, making a friendship bracelet, and embracing the quirky ritual of connection.
Then enters Domhnall Gleeson, who bonds with his own cactus.
After using the “Opalite” spray, Swift and Gleeson’s characters spark a whimsical romance, featuring mall photoshoots with Lewis Capaldi as photographer, pretzel strolls, and matching sequined dance routines.
Cameos include Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Graham Norton as a mall salesman, and Cillian Murphy narrating the ad.
The clip closes with the rock and cactus tying the knot in a playful, intimate ceremony.
Before the video came out, fans predicted it to be more of a dancing number. But with the themes of commercialism and self-help culture satire, the singer has had a deeper impact with her song.
The singer and songwriter of Opalite has kept the character for each star so intact that they feel less forced or burdened and more seamless and natural.
From Murphy's cameo in the Opalite portion poster to Gleeson's praying the toxic cactus, the narration falls effortlessly harmonious.
Seemslike, after dominating the music world, the Eras Tour queen is eyeing towards acing herself as a director.
Does ‘Opalite’ video hint at Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce's upcoming wedding?
The video’s epilogue has a quick hint at Swift’s rumored intimate wedding to Travis Kelce.
A rock from her past and Gleeson’s cactus are shown together with the caption, “Rock and Cactus married in a small, intimate ceremony after meeting through Opalite,” playfully suggesting a quiet, symbolic nuptials.
A second line, “Garbage is still garbage,” recalls the opening trash bin. It subtly nods to Swift’s famous exes and reinforces that past toxic relationships stay in the past.
Opalite's music video is ready to play on Spotify Premium and Apple +.
