'Grey’s Anatomy' star Steven W. Bailey reveals rare diagnosis after years of silence

Steven W. Bailey, best known for his role on Grey’s Anatomy, has opened up about his health battle in a candid and moving post.

On Friday, January 2, the 54-year-old actor took to his X account to reveal that he has been diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disorder known as congenital myasthenia syndrome (CMS).

Bailey, best known for playing Joe across seasons 1 to 7 of the medical drama, shared that he had "spent years" staying silent about a diagnosis that has "shaped [his] life and work."

According to Mayo Clinic, CMS is a group of rare hereditary conditions caused by a gene difference that results in muscle weakness, worsening a person's physical ability.

Using humour to address the situation, Bailey added that while the diagnosis may have excused him from household chores, it has increasingly affected his ability to walk.

The Virtual Man actor said that as his disease progresses, he has begun relying more on a powered wheelchair, noting that it has started to impact him professionally as well.

Toward the end of the post, Bailey said he hopes to portray characters "who live their lives with a chair," highlighting the need for greater representation in film and television.

"Same guy. Same actor. Same artist. Now with wheels," Steven W. Bailey concluded.
